Samuel Eto’o found the back of the net twice, helping Chelsea take lead of their Champions League Group E. Eto’o was the starting striker for Chelsea today, mainly due to a leg injury suffered by Fernando Torres, and he justified it with two goals. The German team started the game well, and almost scored on two different occasions through Julian Draxler and Adam Szalai, but their shots went wide.
Mourinho decided to make some changes from the team that lost to Newcastle united this weekend, as he left out some big names and regular starters. Mourinho benched left back Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and David Luiz and Eden Hazard was not on today’s team list.
Eto scored in each half of the game, but his first goal was due to a horrible error by Schakle’s German goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand. Eto’o deflected Hilderbrand’s attempted clearance into the net, putting Chelsea a goal ahead at half time.
Just a few minutes after half-time, Eto found the back of the net again, as he controlled Willian’s assist and fired a shot past Hildebrand. Senegalese striker, Demba Ba, replaced Eto’o in the 77th minute, and about 5 minutes later he found the back of the net. Assisted by Frank Lampard with a through ball, Ba left footed a well taken shot from the center of the box, beating Hilderbrand for his first goal of the season.
Today’s victory over Schalke is Chelsea’s 100th win in Uefa competitions, and extends Chelsea’s lead at the top of group E to three points. If Chelsea wins their next game again Basel, they are guaranteed to progress to the next round of the Champions League with 15 other teams.
