Chelsea conceded the fastest goal in the EPL this season as Jay Rodriguez put Southampton one goal up in just 14 seconds. Michael Essien was back in the Chelsea line up as he started his first EPL game of the season, but his horrible backward pass in the 14th second of the game was intercepted by Jay Rodriguez who perfectly put the ball past Peter Czech to give Southampton the lead. Chelsea chased the game for most of the second half as they tried to level up, and they almost did through a header from Oscar that just went wide. Frank Lampard replaced injured Oscar, and in the second half Mourinho brought on the only striker left on the bench Demba Ba to replace Essien. With Ba, Torres, and Matta on the field, Chelsea was very much back in the game as they continuously pressed Southampton’s defense and midfield who did well containing Chelsea in the first half.
Jaun Mata who has not seen much playing time this season, made his presence felt in the game, providing two assists and continuously threatening Southampton’s defense. Mata’s 52nd minute corner kick connected with Cahill who leveled Chelsea with a nice header. Ten minutes later in the 62nd minute, John Terry gave Chelsea the lead again through a Juan Mata’s cross that was headed into the corner of the net. Demba Ba sealed the victory for Chelsea in the 90th minute scoring the 3rd goal of the night, and moving Chelsea to 2nd place on the EPL table, only four points behind Arsenal.
With this win, Chelsea extended their unbeaten home record under Jose Mourinho to 67 games. Chelsea’s next game will be against Sunderland as they hope to close in on Arsenal.
