Manchester United and David Moyes plight continued on Sunday as they fell 3-1 to Chelsea. Samuel Eto’s found the net three times for his first Chelsea hat trick, that puts United 14 points behind League leaders Arsenal, and making their chance of finishing in the top four more difficult.
With this loss, United have seven-league loss in the season, and are six points from the 4th Champions League spot. Chelsea on the other hand is just two points behind Arsenal, and Sunday’s win was the 100th Premiere League win for Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho.
Jose Mourinho opted to start Samuel Eto’s as his target man instead of Fernando Torres as expected, considering that the former Liverpool striker is in good form and scored against Hull City in the FA cup match last week.
With Eto’s upfront, Chelsea went into game with the intent to play attacking football, and in the 17th minute Chelsea took control of the game through a beautiful shot from Eto’s that deflected off Michael Carrick.
United came close to equalizing through Danny Welbeck but he somehow wasted his opportunity, and Samuel Eto’o punished United again right before halftime. The Cameroon striker found himself unmarked for an easy tap in to put Chelsea two goals up as they went into halftime.
Jose Mourinho did not make any changes in the second half, and he did not need to, as Samuel Eto’o scored another goal within 4 minutes of the second half. United keeper David de Gea did not hold on to Gary Cahill’s header, and Eto’o who was not well marked was able to scramble for his third goal of the night to complete his hat trick.
Comfortably three goals up, Chelsea choose to manager the game and play more defensive football, and with 12 minutes left in regulation, United finally found the back of the net through Javier Hernandes, but it was too late as United recorded its fourth loss in five games since the beginning of 2104.
United’s trouble continues as they will be without Nemaja Vidic for their next three games following his red card, which means three games suspension. They are also without Robin Van Parsee and Wayne Rooney who are both out injured.
Chelsea’s win means more pressure on League Leaders, Arsenal who are trying to win their first League title since 2004, and for the first time since they left Highbury for the Emirates. Chelsea’s next game will be a FA Cup fourth Round match against Stoke City, and they will host West Ham United on January 29th in a premier League tie.
